On February 7th, 2002, K9 Jambo's handler made a traffic stop on a theft suspect in East Oakland. The suspect fled on foot and was pursued by Jambo who caught up with the suspect attempting to jump over a fence. Jambo pulled down the suspect and detained him until the arrival of his handler. The suspect was then taken in to custody after a brief struggle.
Jambo was taken to the vet the following day due to signs of being injured in the struggle. Jambo was found to have a ruptured spline which was not operable, he was euthanized that same day.
