K9 Spike was shot and killed while apprehending a suspect who had fled police.

Around 6:40 p.m., officers pulled over a vehicle on Buena Vista Street near the northbound Interstate 5 Freeway on-ramp. A passenger in the vehicle fled on foot. K9 Spike was deployed to find the suspect in the residential area. When K9 Spike located him, the suspect fired multiple shots, striking K9 Spike, before fleeing. K9 Spike was transported to an emergency veterinarian, but succumbed to his wounds.

The suspect was found hours later after a lengthy search. When he fired at officers and hit patrol vehicles, officers returned fire, killing him.

K9 Spike had served with the Burbank Police Department for 21 months.
