Special Instructions: In 2024, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) ruled that mandatory life sentences without parole for anyone under the age of 21 were unconstitutional. The killer of Trooper Hanna applied for parole. His hearing was on January 15, 2026, but the board will take a few weeks or months to make a decision. As we have seen in the past, the more letters that are sent, the more they sway the board members.

We do not have the inmate number. Please make sure all correspondence has Trooper George Hanna and inmate Jose Colon. If we receive his inmate number, we will update this letter.

I respectfully ask that you DENY PAROLE to Jose Colon, inmate convicted of killing Trooper George L. Hanna on Saturday, February 26, 1983.

At 8:30 p.m., Trooper Hanna pulled over a vehicle in a liquor store parking lot in Auburn. Unknown to him, the three men in the car had been searching for another business to rob. What was supposed to be a routine traffic stop became an ambush of Trooper Hanna. When he discovered a gun on one subject, Trooper Hanna was shot twice. Then, as he lay on the ground, inmate Colon shot him another four times at close range. Trooper Hanna did not have an opportunity to pull out his own weapon.

Inmate Colon, 20 years old, had been on a two-week robbery spree with the other two men, who were convicted of life in prison without parole. He was also given a life sentence without parole for the assassination of Trooper George Hanna.

Trooper George L. Hanna was only 36 years old when he was murdered. Trooper Hanna was a United States Navy veteran. He became a law enforcement officer and served for nine years with the Massachusetts State Police, assigned to C Troop, following in his father's footsteps, who retired as a Natick police officer. Trooper George Hanna was known as a dedicated, careful, and conscientious professional, highly regarded in the community and among other law enforcement officers. The George L. Hanna Memorial Awards for Bravery have become a symbol of prestige within both the law enforcement community and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Most importantly, George Hanna was a devoted husband, son, brother, and father to three young children. His children grew up without his wisdom and love to guide their lives.

Parole is a privilege and not a right. As a concerned citizen and in the interest of public safety, I again respectfully ask that you DENY PAROLE to inmate Jose Colon. His release is not compatible with public safety. Justice demands that inmate Colon spend his entire sentence of life in prison.
