Merrill Henderson Ogle

Patrolman Merrill Ogle was shot and killed at 5:30 a.m. as he and his partner attempted to arrest a shooting suspect at 436 E. Topeka Street.

The suspect opened fire with a shotgun, striking Patrolman Ogle. Both officers returned fire and killed the suspect.

Patrolman Ogle was a United States Navy WWII veteran and served with the Shreveport Police Department for eight years. He was survived by his wife, son, and three daughters, his mother, brother, and two half-brothers.

You were my grandfather. I never got to know you. I barely got to know my father, your son, Bill, after whom I was named. Bill took a different path than you would have wanted after he lost you. That path led him to federal prison when I was a child. I’ve been told Bill escaped prison, but more likely he absconded parole in the 1990’s sometime. Either way, he couldn’t return to the states without facing more time. He died in a foreign country under a different name before I found the serenity to forgive him for making me grow up without a father, just like him.

I wonder how different our lives might have been if you weren’t taken so young.

I want to meet the Ogle family someday and learn who you were.
