Trooper Robert Perry was killed in an automobile crash while attempting to pass another motorist during a pursuit.
Around 1:35 a.m., Trooper Perry was pursuing a motorcycle driver with an expired license plate who failed to stop. He lost control of his patrol vehicle and crashed into a bridge and a tree on a dirt road off Secondary Road 24 north of Hemingway.
The driver was arrested about a week later. He pleaded guilty to failing to stop for a blue light and siren and was sentenced to two years' probation, a $500 fine, and his license was revoked for one year.
Trooper Perry had served with the South Carolina Highway Patrol for four years. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and parents.
