Deputy Constable D.S. Putnam was shot and killed while attempting to serve a misdemeanor warrant on a man for using abusive language.
Deputy Constable Putnam was notified that the man had returned to the Banner mines, near Littleton. When he located the man a struggle ensued in which Deputy Constable Putnam was shot in the head with his own revolver. During the struggle, Deputy Constable Putman managed to shoot and mortally wound the suspect. He died in a hospital a week later.
