Police Officer Edward Rea was killed in an automobile crash during a vehicle pursuit.
The patrol car he was riding in was broadsided at the intersection of Van Dyke and Kennedy Circle in Warren. The driver was speeding and did not have his car lights on.
The driver was charged with manslaughter.
Officer Rea had served with the Warren Police Department for one year and had previously served with the Detroit Police Department. He was survived by his wife and two children.

View all 11 ReflectionsI was a witness to this terrible tragedy. I was only 16, driving home from rabbit hunting up north. My 3 friends and I still talk about it at times. Only 27 with 2 children. So sad. Hard to believe it was 55 years ago now.
