Officer William Roback was shot to death while transporting a patient who had been injured in an accident.
He was transporting the patient in his patrol car from the Hana Medical Center to Central Maui Memorial Hospital for treatment when the man attacked him as they drove along Hana Belt Road, three miles east of Kailua. In the struggle, the man grabbed Officer Roback's pistol and shot him in the chest. The suspect then shot Officer Roback's partner, who was in the back seat, in the face.
The other officer was able to draw his service weapon and fire six shots at the patient, killing him.
Officer Roback had served with the Maui County Police Department for 31 years.
