Patrolman Harry Shaffer was struck and killed by a vehicle while involved in a foot pursuit of a suspect at Broad Street and Lazelle Street in Columbus.
Shortly after midnight, Patrolman Shaffer was chasing a suspected car thief when he was struck. The driver was not charged. The alleged car thief was never apprehended.
Patrolman Shaffer had served with the Columbus Division of Police for five years. He was survived by his expectant wife and two children.
