Patrolman David Sheehan was shot and killed when he surprised three bandits robbing six men in the wine cellar of the New York Vintage Company at 4 Rivington Street in Manhattan.
As Patrolman Sheehan reached for his gun, one of the robbers shot him in the head. The suspects escaped.
Three suspects were arrested for the suspicion of murder over the course of a year, but no one was convicted of the murder. One of the suspects was sentenced to seven to 15 years for a separate burglary.
Officer Sheehan was a United States Army World War I veteran and was assigned to the 4th Precinct, the present-day 5th Precinct. He was survived by his parents and fiancée.

On today, the 100th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just for your Community but for our Country as well when you served with the U.S. Army as a member of the 165th Infantry Regiment(the Old Fighting 69th) of the 42nd “Rainbow” Division in Europe fighting the Germans during World War I.
