Sergeant Newton Sites succumbed to injuries in an airplane crash while on aerial patrol two days earlier near Parkersburg, Wood County.

Sergeant Sites was a United States Army veteran and served with the West Virginia State Police for seventeen years. He was survived by his mother, brother, and four sisters.
