Private Ivan Thompson was shot and killed while attempting to make an arrest during a traffic stop at 1st and I Streets, NE, in Washington, DC.
He had chased the suspect to the location and fired a warning shot into the ground as the man resisted arrest. The suspect then grabbed Private revolver and shot him five times.
The suspect was arrested and charged with first degree murder. He was found to be insane and committed to St. Elizabeth's Hospital.
Private Thompson was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of WWI. He had served with the United States Park Police for seven years. He was survived by his wife and four children and is buried at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
