Patrolman Harry Tiffany and Patrolman Ronald Ebeltoft were shot and killed after responding to a dispute between two neighbors over the placement of a rose bush on Crandell Street.
During the dispute, one of the men assaulted the other. As both officers were standing outside of the suspect's home, the man snuck up behind them and opened fire with a rifle, killing them both.
A SWAT sniper later shot and killed the suspect.
Patrolman Tiffany was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served with the San Diego Police Department for two years. He had previously served with the Port of San Diego Harbor Police. He was survived by his wife.

View all 23 ReflectionsHarry and I initially were hired in 1979 by the San Diego Harbor Police, and worked together for approximately one year. We both decided that department was not for us, so we went our separate ways, me to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, and Harry to the San Diego Police Department. We stayed in touch with each other until that horrible day (June 6, 1981). When I heard he had been killed, it was like a knife had been stabbed into my heart. I was inconsolable. He was a good friend, and a great police officer. Over the past 42 years, I think of him, and still miss him. Rest in peace my brother, and my friend.
