Officer Terry Autrey was struck by a vehicle and killed while investigating a crash on the Long Beach Freeway between Florence Avenue and Firestone Boulevard at 1:25 p.m.

He and his partner were returning to their cruiser, which was parked on the center divider. As Officer Autrey entered the passenger door, the vehicle sideswiped, and he was struck. Officer Autrey's partner was also injured.

No charges were filed against the driver.

Officer Autrey had served with the California Highway Patrol for only 16 days. He was survived by his expectant wife, two sons, and parents.
