Officer Alfred Waterbury succumbed to a gunshot wound received when he attempted to stop a robbery suspect on 9th Avenue and Adams Street.
Officer Waterbury was on patrol with two other officers in an area that had become strife with robberies. Officer Waterbury witnessed a suspicious man in the neighborhood. He asked the man to stop, but the subject fired a shot, hitting him in the abdomen. Officer Waterbury returned fire before falling to the ground. He was transported to the Sacred Heart Hospital, where he succumbed to his wound the next morning.
The suspect(s) fled after the shooting and were never identified.
Officer Waterbury had served with the Spokane Police Department for two years. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son.
