Gary Robert White

Officer Gary White was shot and killed behind the police department when he and another officer attempted to stop a truck driven by a man wanted for questioning from an earlier domestic assault.

When the truck stopped, the suspect opened fire with a shotgun, striking Officer White below his vest. The other officer was also wounded but was able to return fire but did not strike the suspect. The man fled but was arrested a short time later.

The suspect was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life on December 16, 1977. He died in prison on January 18, 1993.

Officer White had only served with the Nebraska City Police Department for nine days and previously served with the St. Joseph Police Department. He was survived by his parents.

I was a Nebraska State Trooper the morning Gary was killed, stationed in near by Syracuse Nebr. The phone rang early, it was state dispatch. They said there had been a shooting and I was needed to do a blood relay from Omaha to Nebr. City for a wounded officer. I met the Omaha trooper at the Platte river , got the blood, and headed south. I arrived to late. I was told Gary's last words were "I'm not afraid." I had only known him for a few days, he was a friendly, happy , dedicated officer looking forward to a career in a job he was excited to be a part of.
