Patrolman Anton Zapolsky succumbed to gunshot wounds he sustained while attempting to arrest a man who had broken into a car near Wacker Drive and Clark Street.
He and his partner observed the man being chased by other officers. Patrolman Zapolsky and his partner apprehended the fleeing offender, but the man suddenly drew a revolver and shot Patrolman Zapolsky.
Patrolman Zapolsky succumbed to his wounds three days later. The subject was shot and killed by other officers.
Patrolman Zapolsky was a United States WWI veteran and had served with the Chicago Police Department for 12 years. He was survived by his wife and two children.
