Patrolman Bryant Peney was shot and killed during a foot pursuit of a subject in front of 1441 S Federal Highway. at about 10:15 pm.
Patrolman Peney and his partner saw the man attempting to hide in a bush in front of the business. The man fled on foot when Patrolman Peney's partner attempted to talk to him. As Patrolman Peney ran across the roadway to assist with the foot pursuit, the man produced a .357 revolver and opened fire. A round struck Patrolman Peney's arm and entered his chest through an area not protected by his vest. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died early the following morning while in surgery.
The subject was arrested nine hours later during a manhunt involving approximately 200 police officers. The man was convicted of four counts, including first-degree murder, on May 26, 1999. On June 17, 1999, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. On August 27, 1999, the judge presiding over the case reversed the jury's decision and sentenced the suspect to death. The conviction was then commuted to life by the Florida Supreme Court.
Patrolman Peney had served with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department for six years. He is survived by his parents and twin brother. His brother and his father also served with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.
