Police Officer Brian Brown was shot and killed during a gunfight after witnessing a drive-by shooting.

Officer Brown and his partner witnessed the shooting, in which one person was killed, and began to chase the suspects. The suspects opened fire on the two officers, striking Officer Brown in the head and grazing his partner.

One suspect was shot and killed and the other carjacked another vehicle, prompting another chase. The second chase ended when the suspect crashed at Los Angeles International Airport and was shot and wounded during another exchange of gunfire. The second suspect was convicted and sentenced to life.

Officer Brown was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for four years. He is survived by his 7-year-old son.

I remember talking to Brian Brown a week before he was killed; I was bringing in a large amount of marijuana on an arrest and he was passing with his partner and they joked about the aroma with us. Brown was humble and polite- he was almost what you would expect to see on a recruitment poster.

the night of his death, my partner-now retired as a Port PD Sgt, and I received an area wide broadcast of the incident and the pursuit of the second suspect by LAPD Pacific Area officers, which ended right in front of us at LAX Terminal 1, in a barrage of gun fire and the second suspect wounded and arrested.

Later attending the funeral was tough as you see people but never think how their life or your own can end in a moment. This would not be the last time another officer I knew would pay the price for a safer community. It didn't make sense that a former decorated Marine, a father and young assertive officer could be taken in a violent moment.

Rest Well, Officer Brown..Heroes are common men that stand for something when other don't.
