Corporal Steven Levy was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance at the 300 block of Logan Street in Woodbury.
Corporal Levy was a member of a county-wide Critical Incident Team, which had been called to the domestic dispute after the incident turned into a standoff. Corporal Levy entered the home as part of the SWAT team and was attempting to locate the suspect, who was in a closed bedroom.
As Corporal Levy approached the door, the suspect fired, shooting through the door and striking Corporal Levy in the head. Corporal Levy, who was wearing body armor, was transported to a local hospital, where he died at approximately 8:00 a.m.
After the shooting, the suspect committed suicide. The suspect had been convicted of a weapons violation in 1995 and was prohibited from possessing any firearms.
Corporal Levy had served with the Washington Township Police Department for 13 years. He was survived by his wife and two children, ages 2 and 5.
