Deputy Sheriff Albert Anderson was shot as he approached a suspicious man hiding behind a local business at the intersection of Nine Mile Road and Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak Township (modern day City of Ferndale).

As Deputy Anderson questioned the subject, the man produced a .38 caliber revolver and shot him in the abdomen. Investigators believe that the man had just burglarized a nearby store.

Deputy Anderson had served with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office for three years. He was survived by his wife and eight children.

I am the granddaughter of Albert Anderson. Sadly, I never had the opportunity to meet and talk with him. His wife, Martha, was pregnant with my dad and his twin sister at the time of his death. He died in August and they were born in December of the same year. My dad always mourned the fact that he never had a chance to know him.

Coincidentally, I married a policeman myself, so I understand what my Grandmother and her children must have suffered with his loss. It was profound and ever-lasting.

I’m sorry we never had a chance to meet, Grandpa. Rest in peace.
