Deputy Cole was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a U.S. Army deserter from Camp Travis, Texas. The suspect, living in a tent behind his father's house, initially cooperated with Deputy Cole but suddenly grabbed his service revolver from and shot him in the stomach.
The suspect was convicted of murder three weeks later and sentenced to life. He was paroled on December 24, 1926.
Deputy Cole had been with the agency and was survived by his wife and eight children.
