Police Officer William Carrico was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call at the home of an ex-convict.
As he and his partner were driving up to the home the man fired a high-powered rifle through the windshield, striking Officer Carrico in the head. The subject then fled in a boat across the Ohio River into Indiana.
The 48-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder. His first trial resulted in a hung jury. He was re-tried in 1952 and sentenced to eight years in prison for manslaughter.
Officer Carrico was survived by his wife and two children.
