Chief Deputy Lowell Proctor succumbed to gunshot wounds suffered two days earlier when he responded to a disturbance call involving a group of men arguing in the streets.
As Chief Deputy Proctor stepped out of his patrol car he was shot by a man who was hiding in nearby bushes. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds two days later. The shooter was taken into custody about 40 minutes after the incident. He was later convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to seven to 12 years in prison.
Chief Deputy Proctor had served with the White County Sheriff's Department for nine years. He was survived by his wife and six children.
