Deputy Game Warden Robert Marshall was shot and killed by a moonshiner while searching for a game violator on a farm in Preble County.
Deputy Marshall and the Camden marshal were searching the area together but were out of eye-sight. As Game Warden Marshall approached the site of a still, he was ambushed by one of the moonshiners. He was struck in the chest by a shotgun blast and killed instantly.
The Camden marshal rushed to his location and observed the suspect fleeing and making his escape. The suspect was indicted for first-degree murder but was able to evade a large posse.
Game Warden Marshall had served with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources - Division of Wildlife for 10 years. He was survived by his wife.
He is buried in Section 8, Fairmont Cemetery, Camden, Preble County, Ohio.
