Captain Byron Carpenter suffered a fatal heart attack while responding to the scene of a fatal accident where a boy had been struck by a car.
Captain Carpenter was able to slow his vehicle down before it collided with an oncoming car. Two nurses and an off-duty firefighter who witnessed the accident attempted to revive Captain Carpenter. He was transported to Gaston Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Captain Carpenter had served with the Belmont Police Department for 22 years. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
