Officer Scot Beyerstedt succumbed to injuries sustained the previous night when his patrol car crashed during a vehicle pursuit at approximately 9:00 p.m.

He and his training officer were pursuing a vehicle on 24th Street after trying to stop the driver for reckless driving on I-94. The patrol car left the roadway and struck a tree as it rounded an S-curve.

Both officers were transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital where Officer Beyerstedt died. Officer Beyerstedt was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. The vehicle they were pursuing fled the scene.

The driver was a convicted felon and was arrested on August 8, 2005. He was convicted in Van Buren County on December 14th, 2005, of one count of fleeing and eluding, resulting in death. On January 6th, 2006, he was sentenced to five to 25 years in prison. The subject only served 7 1/2 years. He was arrested in 2016 for fleeing from police again.

Officer Beyerstedt had served as a part-time officer for the Mattawan Police Department for only two weeks and had previously served with the Cassapolis Police Department for four months. He was survived by his father and two sisters.

Twenty years have passed...how can it seem so long ago and like yesterday all at the same time? But this year there was a memorial service. Scot was remembered and his Lord and Savior was honored. We are thankful for all who attended; it was a blessing to see the familiar faces who walked that valley with us. Thank you to Dave Ostrem for his intentionality...what an abundant blessing to our hearts; to Mattawan PD Chief Mansfield for his care above and beyond anything expected; to Todd and Lisa Oliver, Linda Koning, friends, officers who graduated and worked with Scot...each with unique and special memories; to Officer Hutchins who was with Scot that night; to Chief VerHage and the message he left on our phone; to KVCC police academy staff, some who knew Scot and others who only knew us yet took the time to come; to the current Mattawan department who came and showed their respect for us and for a man they never knew. Thank you to each one who attended, the stories you told, the encouragement you gave, the love you showed to us by taking the time. Thank you. We understand the value of time and how short it can be; Scot has been gone almost as long as he was with us. May the Lord continue to be blessed as we remember the life He gave Scot and Scot's desire to serve Christ Jesus his King with his whole life. Twenty years later...still loving, still missing, still waiting for the day we will worship together...
