William Lee Mayo

Constable Lee Mayo succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained two days earlier when he was shot while attempting to make an arrest at the scene of a disturbance.

He and another county constable had responded to the home on Elm Hill Pike after receiving reports of a disturbance. When they arrived at the scene, they encountered a third county constable who was drunk and part of the disturbance. When the the two responding constables attempted to arrest two men who lived in the home, the drunk constable protested the arrest. As the constables continued with the arrest, the drunk constable pulled out his gun and opened fire, striking Constable Mayo in the abdomen three times.

Both constables returned fire killing the drunk constable. Constable Mayo was taken to Nashville General Hospital where he died two days later.

Constable Mayo had served as an elected constable for 4 years. He was survived by his wife and three children.
