Sergeant Michael Larson was killed in an automobile crash caused by a drunk driver while responding to backup deputies shortly before midnight.

The drunk driver was charged with DUI, possession of marijuana, failure to maintain a lane, and first-degree vehicular homicide. On November 4, 2008, he was convicted of vehicular homicide and sentenced to 10 years probation and 2.5 years in a probation detention center.

View all 336 ReflectionsNineteen years ago today, my world changed forever. It still feels impossible that one reckless choice—a drunk driver—took you from me so suddenly. Yet even after all these years, your presence hasn’t faded. I still miss you, deeply and quietly, in ways I can’t always put into words.
I think of you often—sometimes in soft, unexpected moments, sometimes in the big ones when I wish more than anything that you were here. There are days when the ache feels just as sharp as it did then, and other days when your memory brings more warmth than pain. But every day, in one way or another, you are still with me. The love we shared didn’t end nineteen years ago; it continues to shape me, comfort me, and guide me.
I’ve carried you with me into every new chapter. I hope you’d be proud of how I’ve kept going, even when it was hard. I hope you know how loved you still are, and how deeply you are missed.
Today, I honor you—not only the tragedy of how you left, but the beauty of how you lived, and the way you loved me. I will always hold you in my heart.
Until we meet again, I’ll keep your memory close and your love even closer.
