Mickey Charles Lippy

Trooper Mickey Lippy and civilian Pilot Stephen Bunker were killed in a helicopter crash while performing a medical evacuation of two critically injured teenagers from Charles County.

During the flight, the EuroCopter Dauphin helicopter encountered severe weather and Pilot Bunker radioed to have two ambulances meet them at Andrews Air Force Base to complete the transport. At approximately 12:30 am, air traffic controllers lost contact with the helicopter.

A ground search was initiated and approximately two hours later the wreckage was found in Walker Mill Regional Park. Trooper Lippy, Pilot Bunker, Charles County EMT Tanya Mallard, and one of the two patients were killed in the crash.

Trooper Lippy had served with the Maryland State Police for four years and was assigned to the Aviation Command. He was survived by his wife and 4-month-old daughter.

I was in training with Mickey and we were paired up during EMT, paramedics training. I was 21, black and a female. Mickey was one of a few men who would go onto to treat me as a human. He didn’t do back flips to be paired up with me, but he gave a look that he would treat me as an equal. In training overall, he was calm, helpful, strong, a go-getter, determined and solid. You could tell he had a wonderful family he was working hard for. He was the best coworker to have. To this day, he’s the kindest guy I could thing of. I admired his strength and his commitment to be the best husband, father, trooper. We did the training together and in everything he taught me, I would go on to feel safe to help others in an emergency. I felt he was really there to save lives. His life mattered to me, I send his family and friends my deepest condolences.
