Add to My HeroesJames Henry Redmond, III
Policeman James Redmond was shot and killed by a 16-year-old youth he had arrested for public drunkenness and was escorting to jail.
Citizens attracted to the scene by the pistol shot, found the suspect in the act of kicking the officer's dead body. A lynching was narrowly averted as officers arrived on the scene and arrested the suspect. He was convicted of murder and hanged in Jackson a month later.
Policeman Redmond was survived by his wife and two sons; a daughter had preceded him in death by one month.
