Deputy City Marshal Perman Calderwood was stabbed to death while attempting to arrest a robbery suspect at 832 South Vermont Avenue while off duty.
He was en route home when he observed a shop owner chasing two men who had just robbed his shop. When Deputy Calderwood intervened, he was stabbed in the chest.
Two men were arrested, convicted of first-degree murder, and hanged at Folsom Prison on October 2nd, 1931.
Deputy Marshal Calderwood was a United States Navy World War I veteran and served with the Los Angeles City Municipal Court for five years. He was survived by his parents and brother.
