Marshal Robert Garrett was shot and killed in an act of revenge from an incident that occurred eight months earlier. He and the county commissioner had advised a property owner that a portion of his land would be acquired through eminent domain to erect a bridge.
On October 16, 1909, the property owner fatally shot Marshal Garrett as a result of the action. The property owner was also shot and killed. It is not clear if Marshall Garrett killed him or other men who were with him.
Marshal Garrett was survived by his wife.
