Corporal Chris Paschal succumbed to injuries sustained two days earlier in an automobile crash during an ice storm at mile marker 40.5 on northbound I-81.
He was off duty, traveling with his wife and daughter, when he observed another crash. He called the Smyth County dispatch to report the crash. As he spoke to the dispatcher and attempted to stop to offer assistance his vehicle slid on the ice and overturned twice. He was ejected from the vehicle and suffered critical injuries.

Our Brother-in-Blue, Corporal Christopher Kent Paschal, of the Smyth County VA Sheriff's Office, was suddenly and violently taken from us; Killed in the Line-of-Duty in a Cruiser Accident . God's Mission for America's Peace Officers:
"For the policeman does not frighten people who are doing right; but those doing evil will always fear him. So if you don't want to be afraid, keep the laws and you will get along well. The policeman is sent by God to help you. But if you are doing something wrong, of course you should be afraid, for he will have you punished. He is sent by God for that very purpose." (Romans 13: 3-4 TLB)
