Chief of Police Harvey DeZarn was shot and killed in front of the city jail on Main Street in Manchester at approximately 11:00 pm.
He was leaving the jail after investigating a disturbance between prisoners when he was struck by a shotgun blast fired from across the street.
His killer was never apprehended.
Chief DeZarn had served with the Manchester Police Department for one month. He was survived by his wife and five children.
