Deputy Sheriff Albert Goos was shot and killed while checking on a car that was parked in a pasture.
He had obtained the driver's license and was walking back to his patrol car when the man suddenly drew a handgun and shot him in the neck.
The 26-year-old suspect was apprehended a month later by FBI agents in Memphis, Tennessee. He was executed in the electric chair on June 10, 1955.
Deputy Goos was survived by his wife and one child.
