Deputy Sheriff Harvey White was shot and mortally wounded near Boston as he and three deputies attempted to arrest a man on a charge of burglary. As the officers entered the man's home he shot Deputy White in the side, the bullet entering his liver. The other deputies rushed Deputy White to a hospital in Boston where he died later that night.
The suspect, 24, was apprehended a week later in Abbeville, Alabama. On November 7th, 1931, he was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death. His sentence was later commuted to life. He escaped from prison twice; the first time was on October 23, 1933, and captured on February 16, 1934, in Florida; the second time was on June 17, 1935, and captured on September 8, 1936. He was paroled on March 7, 1946. On January 30, 1950, he was shot and killed by a deputy sheriff in Colquitt County as he and another deputy tried to serve three forgery warrants on him. He was shot when he pulled a pistol from his pocket.
Deputy White was survived by his wife and three children. He had previously server as a special officer for the Seaboard Railroad and with the Glynn County Police.
