Deputy Sheriff Kathleen Briscoe succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained two days earlier while assisting another deputy during a burglary call on Westbank Expressway in Gretna.

On September 5, 1988, while off duty, Deputy Briscoe was assisting another deputy in an arrest when a struggle ensued around 10:30 p.m. Deputy Briscoe, with her weapon drawn, stepped backward, lost her balance, and fell over a guardrail. Her weapon discharged, striking her in the head. She was rushed to West Jefferson Hospital, where she succumbed to her wounds two days later.

Deputy Briscoe served with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office for nine years.
