Deputy Sheriff Harold Hillman was believed to have been beaten to death while attempting to return legal liquor to a suspect it had been confiscated from.
He had left his home in Island Falls and told his wife he would return in approximately 15 minutes. When he failed to return home by the following morning a large search initiated. His body was never found, although a bloody club was located along the road near the home of the prime suspect.
Deputy Hillman was officially declared dead by the Maine legislature on March 13th, 1915.
Deputy Hillman was survived by his wife and six children.
