Patrolman Edward Moraghan drowned in the North River while on a special assignment to patrol the bulkhead adjacent to the Manhattan Sand Company property at the foot of Perry Street.
He and other officers had been assigned to the location to prevent disorder as the result of a strike by employees of the company. He fell into the water between 2:30 am and 4:00 am.
His body was recovered the following day approximately 25 yards from the pier.
Patrolman Moraghan had served with the New York City Police Department for 14 years and was assigned to the Charles Street Station. He was survived by his wife and five children.
