Chief of Police Alexander Yost succumbed to heat exhaustion he first suffered while on duty in extreme temperatures on the 4th of July.
He began to show symptoms of heatstroke at around 11:00 am but remained on duty until 3:00 pm when he was compelled to go home. His condition worsened and he passed away on July 6th, 1902.
Chief Yost had served with the Catlettsburg Police Department for two years. He was survived by his wife, one child, mother, three brothers, and three sisters.
