Deputy Sheriff Andy Jenkins succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained four days earlier while attempting to arrest a miner at Sterling, Tennessee.
Despite his wounds, Deputy Jenkins returned fire and killed the subject.
Deputy Jenkins was taken to a hospital in Middlesboro, Kentucky, where he succumbed to his wounds on December 31st, 1920.
Deputy Jenkins was survived by his wife and five children.

View all 7 ReflectionsAndy Houston Jenkins was my great grandfather. My grandfather was Christopher Lum Jenkins, father Jack Tenent Jenkins. As I remember stories passed down of Great granpa Andy it was told as a young man he was stabbed and cut in a courting dispute. His intestines were coming out he carried them home in his hands where they were washed in a tub and pushed back in his belly and sewed up. This was one of the reasons told he succumbed to his shooting injuries because his intestines where all out of place from a boyhood injury. I retired in 2015 as a federal law enforcement officer and reside in Claiborne county. May God continue to watch over our peace makers and keep them safe.
