Patrolman Lon Castle was shot and killed as he pursued burglary suspects through a lumber yard at 2:30 a.m.
Three men, in their mid-20s, were apprehended and charged with his murder.
Patrolman Castle is the brother-in-law of Officer Charles E Ball of the Huntington, West Virginia, Police Department, who was shot and killed in the line of duty on November 10, 1923.
Patrolman Castle was a United States Army Spanish War veteran. He was survived by his wife and children.
