Sergeant George Chandler was killed in an automobile crash when his patrol car was broadsided by a passenger bus as he made a U-turn on Highway 40 (modern day I-80) west of Reno, Nevada. He was attempting to catch up to a tractor-trailer when the accident occurred.
Sergeant Chandler had served with the Nevada State Police for six months and had previously served with the Reno Police Department for four years. He was survived by his wife and two children.

His grandson, David Chandler, served Sacramento County as a Senior Probation Officer participating in dynamic entries with the Gang Task Force and retired as a Court Probation Officer continuing the family’s tradition of service. His daughter, Marvella Lokke and granddaughter, Paige Chandler both served as teachers. His grandson TJ Lokke served as an emergency room charge nurse. His grandaughter Mary Lokke served as a physical therapist, and his grandaughter, Jill Chandler served as a mental health therapist working during the AIDs crisis and on the streets with disenfranchised youth. His wife, LaVerne became president of the Womens’ Business Association, leading the family in a history of service dating back to 1609 when they first arrived in Jamestown.
