Patrolman Gerald DiJoseph was shot and killed while making a traffic stop on James Street. The suspect was able to gain control of Patrolman DiJoseph's service weapon and shot him in the head.

The suspect fled the scene and remained at large for seven months. He was apprehended by a member of the New York City Police Department following a vehicle pursuit. On February 9, 1987, he was found not guilty. No one else has ever been charged.

Patrolman DiJoseph had served with the Bridgeport Police Department for 11.5 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.

He was buried in St. Michael's Cemetery in Stratford, Connecticut.

Like Jeff Mills , I also performed cpr on officer Dejoseph the day of his murder at St Vincent’s Medical Center. As one of four day/night technicians I remember the sad day well.All our staff was familiar with the police and our beloved ER social worker (rip Joanne ) was dating a BPT officer.I was 23 years old but I will not forget that day ever .
