Police Officer James Donohoe was shot to death by a suspected robber on the platform of the Market-Frankford Elevated Station at 11th Street.
Officer Donohoe had gone into the subway after learning of the holdup at a dry cleaner. The suspect shot Officer Donohoe twice at close range.
The suspect was later shot and killed by police in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.
Officer Donohoe was a U.S Army veteran of WWII and served with the Philadelphia Police Department for seven and a half years. He was survived by his wife and daughter.
