As a career Law Enforcement Executive, who recently came to the Brown University Police Department, I was deeply moved to learn that the conference room is dedicated to Officer Joseph Doyle. His story is one of courage, commitment, and sacrifice.

Officer Doyle served this department with distinction for 18 years, and before that, he honorably served our nation as a pilot in the United States Air Force. His dual legacy as both a veteran and a police officer reflects a life dedicated to protecting others, whether in the skies or on the streets of our community.

Though I never had the privilege of serving alongside him, his presence is felt in the halls of this department. His example reminds us that the badge we wear carries with it not only responsibility, but also the enduring spirit of those who came before us.

On March 28, 1988, Officer Doyle made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. We honor him not only for how he died, but for how he lived—with integrity, bravery, and devotion to service. His memory continues to inspire all of us who follow in his footsteps.

Officer Doyle’s legacy is a guiding light for this department, and I am humbled to serve in a place that carries his name and spirit forward.

Respectfully,
Francisco Ortiz
