Patrolman Gerald Fackert was killed in a motorcycle crash at the intersection of 46th Street and Troost Avenue in Kansas City around 6:00 a.m.

When Patrolman Fackert and his partner, riding in the sidecar attachment of the motorcycle, turned onto Troost Avenue, they collided with a truck that had not stopped at the intersection. Both patrolmen were dragged a few feet before the truck could stop. They were transported to General Hospital, where Patrolman Fackert passed away from internal injuries later that afternoon.
