Inspector Fleckiger was driving him to the Calexico police station when the man produced a gun and fatally shot him. The suspect was apprehended three days later in Mexicali, Mexico. While his extradition back to the United States was being processed he escaped from three Mexican policemen on a train as they were transporting him to a prison in November 1945.
