Officer Michael Griffin succumbed to injuries received five days earlier when he was involved in a motorcycle accident while on duty. He was traveling on U.S. Highway 50 near Sacramento when his motorcycle's wheel began to wobble due to high speeds. The bike went out of control and Officer Griffin was thrown to the ground.

Officer Griffin had been with the agency for nine years.
